Gingham & Hydrangeas

Sunglasses // Dress (comes in tall sizes, too!) // Bracelets // Shoes

One of my favorite places to go for dessert on BI is the Ice Cream Place. On the way down to the shop from Waterstreet, there are these gorgeous bushes of pink hydrangeas. Hydrangeas are my favorite flower, and they're all over the island in lots of different shapes, sizes, and colors. However, the hydrangeas on the way to the Ice Cream Place are the prettiest and brightest pink ones I've seen! We took a break from shopping today so I could take some photos of them.

Aren't they gorgeous?

On the Docks Part Two

If you haven't already seen on instagram (@brunettesandpearls), Block Island has been amazing so far. The weather has been beautiful almost every day (knock on wood), and we've already spent hours on the beach or walking through town. On Monday my parents and I ventured off-island to visit Brown University and RISD in Providence, RI. I liked both schools and I love the city, but I don't think either would be my first choice. We may visit Yale at some point in the upcoming week; if anyone has any suggestions for things to do in New Haven, please let me know!

When we arrived back at the BI ferry in Narragansett, we had an hour before our boat was scheduled to leave, so I snapped a few pictures of my outfit while we waited on the docks. This is my go-to combination for whenever it's boiling outside but I still want to look put together - the J.Crew sidewalk skirts and button-downs are very lightweight, and sperry's let your feet breathe and are comfortable for walking all day.

Hope your summer is going well!

Packing Preppy

Hello everyone, long time, no post! I'm sorry for my absence here on the blog, but I'm excited to say that you can expect a lot of posts coming up, as I am heading to Block Island tomorrow. It's been a family tradition for as long as I can remember to visit my grandma at her summer home on the island, and BI is one of my favorite places on earth!

I wanted to share with you an overview of everything I'm packing for two weeks of lying on the beach, long walks, and shopping in town. When I pack, I try to make sure that every item I bring is a multi-tasker (for example, shirtdresses that can be a beach coverup during the day and double as a nicer dress for a night out) in order to save space in my suitcase. Likewise, I also have to pack for all kinds of weather - you never know when you might run into a rainy New England day on the island.

Stay tuned to the blog and insta (@brunettesandpearls) for updates from my trip! More posts soon to come.

Casually Monogrammed

hat // sweatshirt // tee // shorts (similar) // shoes

Can you have too many monogrammed things at once? If so, I'm probably approaching the limit. I got this adorable sweatshirt and hat from possibly one of my all-time favorite Etsy stores, 28PaperClips. They have a huge variety of things that they monogram, and lots of script and thread color options to pick from. I definitely have my eye on a few things, especially these shorts (seersucker, scalloped, and monogrammed - a triple threat) and this adorable long sleeved tee.

Hope your summer is going well!

Today was an amazing summer day! My lovely blogger friend/photographer extraordinaire Mary was kind enough to spend an afternoon with me in Old Town, one of my favorite waterfront places to visit in Virginia. Although it was hot and we had a stray thunderstorm (it started pouring right after we took photos!), the sun soon came back out and the day turned out to be really nice.

Before photos, we stopped into my favorite preppy boutique, The Lucky Knot, and had a mini try-on photoshoot. They carry everything from Vineyard Vines to Krass & Co., and the store is so adorable!

After photos, we walked up to the Pink Palm (our local Lilly store) and window shopped through all of the season's new Lilly items. I have so many things on my wishlist now! I'm totally in love with this gorgeous tank top I tried on in the Barefoot Princess print (check out more in this print here!).

For dinner we ate at an adorable place called Bread & Chocolate - which are definitely my guilty pleasures - and finished the evening with shirley temples at Chart House overlooking the water. Overall, it was an amazing day, and it's moments like this that make me love summer.

What's In My Shopping Bag? (Gap)

Time for the second installment of my "what's in my shopping bag" series! This time I wanted to show you what I've been eyeing from Gap. I absolutely love Gap's color scheme as a whole - blue with bright pops of color. Their denim is also a favorite of mine, and being a tall girl I appreciate that they have extended sizes online. That's what you'll be seeing in my shopping cart, along with some fun pieces (hello, off-the-shoulder top!) and patterns (the dress in the upper right corner is a major love).

What are your favorite things from Gap?

4th of July

lipstick // dress (similar style here) // shoes

Happy fourth everyone! With barbecues, fireworks, concerts, and parties, the fourth of July is one of my all-time favorite holidays. I feel like it's everything that makes summer so amazing all rolled into one day! Although today was not the best day here in Virginia (it's pouring rain as I write), celebrations still went on.

Mary and I held a mini-photoshoot to capture our outfits for the day. This Lilly dress is such a gorgeous style featuring one of my favorite prints Yacht Sea and a really flattering halter neckline. I wore it with some jeweled brown sandals  and - of course - red lipstick for the red white and blue! It's perfect for an outdoor barbecue or evening spent at a party.

I hope your fourth of July is going well (and that your weather was less gloomy than mine!). Happy birthday America!

The Best Summer Pick-Me-Ups

*via

Summer is tons of fun, don't get me wrong. But sometimes it can be hard not to get too caught up in schedules, travel, and events. When life gets busy, it's nice to slow down and take a moment for yourself. Here are my favorite summer pick-me-ups!

1. // An ice-cold drink.   You don't have to be as obsessed with (maybe even addicted to?) iced coffee as I am to be able to enjoy a refreshing drink. Whether it's iced tea, lemonade, or even frozen hot chocolate (I definitely recommend trying this one if you haven't already!), stop by your local coffee shop and treat yourself.

2. // A new lipstick.   Who doesn't love lipstick, am I right? If you're ever feeling bored with your makeup or outfit, a new lipstick can do wonders to change your whole look. You don't have to spend much, just a few dollars at the drugstore, to switch things up and refresh your makeup.

3. // Try a face mask.   Nothing feels better than a cooling face mask in the summer. Whether you make your own or buy them, face masks are such a great way to pamper yourself from home without having to spend a lot. Especially when my skin is out in the sun all day, it can really use the tlc!

4. // Make your favorite recipe.   Whether it's chocolate chip pancakes or a fruit salad, making and enjoying your favorite recipe for no reason at all is a simple way to get an instant pick-me-up.  Bonus points if you share your creations too!

5. // Go somewhere on your bucket list.   I know that personally, there's lots of places around where I live that I want to go this summer. Taking the time to actually visit somewhere that you've always wanted to go not only makes you happy, but also lets you make memories and have new experiences! It doesn't have to be far, either - a local trip to a new art exhibit, a hiking trail, or a park can all be fun, inexpensive ways to see something new.

I hope your summers are going well so far!

June Favorites

So much has happened in June! It's crazy to think that just at the beginning of the month I was studying for finals, and now I'm officially one week into summer break. I'm really enjoying summer so far, but as my routine has changed (no more waking up at 6:00 am and sitting in classrooms all day!) so have the products I've been loving. Here's an overview of all of my favorites from the month of June:

Tommy Hilfiger V-Neck Tees. // These tees are such a staple in my wardrobe, and I usually don't give them enough credit. They're super comfortable and flattering, but look effortlessly put together paired with anything from a skirt (like above!) to a pair of chinos. I'm always on the lookout for more colors, and I especially love the peach color shown above and classic white.

NYX Whipped Lip and Cheek Souffle in Coral-Sicle. // You may have noticed that I have a slight obsession with orange in the summer time. This lip/cheek product from NYX is a pretty coral color and I love using it as a cream blush and a lip tint. It's easy to use and looks super natural; perfect for quick summer makeup!

Yeti Rambler (30 oz). // This has got to be one of the best purchases I've made in the past few months. I'm not sure how it does it, but my Yeti manages to keep any drink I put in it ice-cold for hours on end - longer than anything else I've ever used. I absolutely love it, and it's such a life saver when I want to bring iced tea or lemonade on the go and I don't want it to melt in the heat!

Smith's Rosebud Salve. // I recently started a round of Accutane to help clear up my skin, and it's been working wonders. However, it has made my skin (especially my lips) super dry. Rosebud salve has been a lifesaver for me in keeping my lips moisturized! It has a nice pink tint, and smells like roses - what more could you ask for? I apply it before bed, and at any point during the day when my lips need a little pick-me-up.

J.Crew Sidewalk Skirt. // Just like the TH v-neck tees, the sidewalk skirts (aka the "paper bag skirts") from J.Crew Factory are a huge staple for me, especially in the summer. They come in so many colors, they're comfortable, and look good on absolutely everyone.

LL.Bean Boots. // Even though it's summer, we've had quite a few days where it's been pouring rain. On those days I've been pulling out my bean boots and wearing them with some lightweight socks. They're such versatile shoes, and I would definitely recommend that you look into getting a pair if you haven't already.

Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen. // Especially when taking medicine for my skin, I am always super careful about making sure that I have enough SPF on my face. This sunscreen is the only one I have ever tried that doesn't make me break out or irritate my skin. It has a really light texture that feels really nice on the skin, and I haven't gotten a burn yet!

How was June for you?
