Most Inspirational Style in Film

Maybe I'm on my own with this one, but one of my favorite things to do when I'm watching a movie is to look at the fashion, especially that of the female characters. I find it so fascinating to see how stylists dress characters to portray their personalities and traits and I love taking style tips from my favorites. Here are some of the films that inspire me.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

This vintage film stars Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell as two neighbors, one of which (Ewell) is attracted to the other. I think that, among the vintage movie starlets, Marilyn is usually seen as more of the sex icon than the style icon. However, watching her films I find myself admiring her simple, elegant, and flattering choices. In The Seven Year Itch, "The Girl" (Marilyn's character is never given a proper name), wears several gorgeous ensembles, including the iconic white dress and an adorable pink pant and shirt set.

Clueless (1995)

Clueless's style is a 90's spin on classic prep. Argyle, sweater vests, and button downs meet mini skirts and scrunchies. Alicia Silverstone as Cher is the picture of confidence and she really sells every outfit she wears to the audience. Equally stylish best friend Dionne (played by Stacey Dash) is the perfect compliment, and the two make an ultra-stylish duo. Who could forget the yellow plaid set?

How to Catch a Thief (1955)

Grace Kelly always stuns in her films, but especially in How To Catch a Thief. Her clothes are the picture of elegance, characterized by clean lines and signature 1950's elements like full skirts, wasp waists and accessories like neck scarves. Her blue dress is one of my favorite film outfits of all time.

Jackie (2016)

This was one of my favorite films of 2016. Jackie is a beautifully-directed psychological thriller following Jackie Kennedy herself in the days immediately following her husband's assassination. The cinematography itself is stunning, but so is Natalie Portman and her portrayal of Jackie. The costumes were made as recreations of Jackie's iconic pieces, and it's so incredible to see them really come to life. My favorite include the green dress Jackie wore in the ballroom scene and her elegant powder blue robe.
